Updated estimates for the 2022 sow inventory

According to the USDA, a significant decline in the sow inventory is expected for the world’s major producers. However, China, Mexico, Canada, and South Korea are expected to see increases.

According to the latest estimates published by the USDA on April 8, most of the world’s major swine producers are expected to see significant decreases in their sow herds in 2022. For the European Union, a reduction of 3.5% with respect to 2021 is expected, from 11.3 to 10.9 million head. Likewise, for the United States and Russia, inventories are projected to be 6.1 and 3.5 million head, respectively, representing decreases of 0.8% and 1.1%. For Brazil, the leading swine-producing country in Latin America, inventory is estimated at 2.98 million head with a decrease of 1% compared to 2021 (3.01 million head).

However, China is projected to see 1.3% growth with respect to 2021, reaching 40 million head. Mexico is expected to increase its inventory by 2.4% with 1.3 million head, while Canada and South Korea are expected to grow by 0.3% and 2.2%, respectively, reaching 1.2 and 1 million head.
